Job Function

  • Optimize quay side operations by preparing vessel plan for discharging & loading containers (container stowage), with due considerations to vessel configuration and stability, stowage principles, optimal quay crane utilization, safety and discipline

Job Context

DP World needs to supervise and ensure that all operators operate equipment safely according to the required plan and instructions and as per safety standards to achieve the company’s objectives

Objectives:

  • Ensure that team are aware and complying with all operations activity’s procedures in terminal. Increase Operations Performance
  • Increase Equipment’s Productivity
  • Improvement Handover cycle.
  • Zero Incidents

The job focuses on the following pillars:

  • Knowledge of Terminals Activities
  • Knowledge of heavy equipment.
  • Fully Conversant with safety procedures
  • Verbal Communication with Blue collars, especially operators.
  • Leadership skills in leading a large number of people to achieve DPWS targets

Key Performance Areas:

  • Responsible for safety & discipline in work area
  • Check vessel schedules to prioritize vessel planning activity
  • Ensure new vessel structure is requested from agent and drawn in Zodiac no later than 48 hours in advance of vessel arrival
  • Liaise with customers to ensure that stowage instructions are received from vessel coordinator or agent in accordance with terminal deadlines (24-12 hours prior to vessel arrival)
  • Download import Baplie 24 hours prior to vessel arrival, or within 3 hours of receipt (whichever is sooner) and open vessel file, and start vessel check list for handover purposes
  • Any errors in baplie should be communicated and resolved with vessel agent prior to vessel arrival.
  • Check manual ‘specials’ lists to ensure that that reefer/DG/OOG information has downloaded correctly into the system
  • Ensure that any instructions relating to transshipment units, priority discharge or ‘agroupage’ imports are communicated to relevant parties for appropriate handling/stacking
  • Ensure that liner request restows are planned in accordance with instructions
  • Ensure that loading list is finalized by the Cargo Control Clerk and that you are aware of all agreed late runners for vessel.
  • Check that the stowage plans match the approved cargo list and resolve any issues with shipping line / cargo control prior to commencing load.
  • Follow precisely the loading plan sent by Shipping Line (weight, POD, specials) and sequence the containers taking into consideration the locations in yard to avoid unnecessary shuffles (use yard view)
  • Check quantities and types of empty units that are required and ensure that any substitutions are approved by shipping line
  • Ensure that loading plan is approved by Chief Officer prior to start of load and e-mail a copy of the approved plan to the vessel coordinator (agent)
  • On vessel arrival (or at agreed cut-off point whichever is later) prepare list of any units that will be excluded from load plan and e-mail to cargo-control and vessel agent
  • Prepare the crane sequencing program in accordance with allocated resource to minimise port time, avoid crane clashes and achieve agreed operational KPI
  • Prepare all vessel documentation (crane schedule, bayplans etc) for operations staff and ensure that this is distributed prior to vessel arrival. Any amendments to bayplans should be distributed prior to commencing work on the bay
  • Monitor vessel operations in real-time and resolve any exceptions that may occur.
  • On request of crane driver / Quay Supervisor plan in Zodiac any restows that may be required to improve terminal performance. These should be recorded on the crane log and show number of restows, bay performed and reason.
  • Check manual bayplans as returned and ensure any errors are reported immediately to Shift Superintendent for resolution.
  • Maintain a detailed crane log of moves per hour to include all delays. You should report the time of delay, the bay(s) affected and the type of delay. Copies to be distributed to Shift Superintendent and Planning Manager, original to be kept in vessel file
  • Assess impact of yard congestion or equipment breakdown on vessel operations and recommend necessary changes to crane schedule or vessel plan (with agreement of C/O)
  • Final Baplie file to be verified by C/O near to or on completion of operations (prior to sailing) and copy e-mailed to vessel coordinator / agent within 1 hour of completion.
  • Collate all vessel documentation in file with completed checklist
  • Prepare a detailed handover for shift change
  • Support and cover the Yard Planner/Dispatcher Role(s) as required when manning reduced in accordance with business requirements.
  • Any other adhoc duties that may be assigned by Line Supervisor or Terminal Management

Qualifications Required:

  • Bachelor Education Degree in IT Computer science, aeronautic, heavy industries or similar.

Experience and Skills Required:

  • Experience in container terminal operations from 3:5years in terminal operations.
  • Work standard adherence
  • Understanding of vessel characteristics/ dimensions, factors impacting vessel stability
  • Work experience in container terminal operating system
  • Excellent computer operating skills
  • Decision making and analytical ability
  • Goal and achievement oriented
