The Basic department has received more than 5.5 million applications for their Teaching assistant and general school assistant posts. Around 278 000 positions were available when the application process opened at the end of last month.
Known as the Basic Education Employment initiative (BEEI), the program aims to provide employment for unemployed youth at schools around the country.
Basic Education Department spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga says the number of applications received by the department shows the desperation of young people for employment in South Africa.
Mhlanga explained that qualifying applicants must be between the ages of 18 and 35 currently, and should not be pursuing studies or receiving any form of government grants.
