According to the 2002 Tanzania National Census, the population of Chunya District was 206,615. In 2006, the District Commissioner of Chunya District was Frank Uhahula. In 2015, Songwe District was split from the western part of Chunya District and integrated into the newly created Songwe Region
The origin of the word Chunya comes from a small stream near the first district headquarters in Chunya. The stream came mainly during the rainy season and this is due to the climate of Chunya which is natural.
The most indigenous tribes of the Chunya people are nomadic, nomadic peoples who mostly lived in the elite and the gods who lived in the Songwe River basin, but within these three tribes there were tribes.
