Ratiba ya AFCON 2024

The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2024 offers a chance to 24 teams vying for the honor of being crowned as the number one African national team. Morocco’s semi-final game in the 2022 World Cup took a new look for African nations as Walid Regragui’s team beat Spain and Portugal to become the first African team to reach the semi-finals.

The Atlas Lions will try to turn that into an AFCON success, having not reached the final since losing to Tunisia in 2004, while Senegal are the defending champions.

assengaonline.com brings you important AFCON 2023 dates, match schedules and details on how the club calendar will be affected by the competition.

When will AFCON 2024 be held?

AFCON 2024 will start on January 13, 2024 with the final scheduled for February 11. The tournament will consist of six groups of four teams (A-F) with the top two teams directly qualifying for the round of 16.

The 12 teams will be joined by the four teams that took the top three from the six groups, with criteria based on head-to-head results.

AFCON 2024 round dates, schedule

The hosts Ivory Coast will start the opening match against Guinea-Bissau on January 13 in Abidjan. The round of 16 starts on January 27, with the quarter-finals and semi-finals starting on February 2 and 7.

  • Group Stage: January 13-24, 2024
  • Phase 16: January 27-30, 2024
  • Quarter-finals: 2-3 February 2024
  • Semi-finals: 7 February 2024
  • Third place playoff: February 10, 2024
  • Final: February 11, 2024

Why was AFCON 2023 moved?

AFCON 2024 has followed the example of the 2022 tournament by undergoing major schedule changes. AFCON 2022 was originally scheduled to take place in June-July 2021 in Cameroon, before being moved to January 2021, due to hot and rainy weather due to playing in the summer.

The tournament was later pushed forward to January 2022, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and AFCON 2023 was moved to 2024 due to player welfare concerns confirmed over playing in the middle of the summer in Africa. The tournament has retained its AFCON 2023 title with certain sponsorship deals, despite being played in 2024.

How many Premier League, Champions League matches will be missing for AFCON 2024?

Despite the possibility of an international tournament mid-season, disruption to the Premier League calendar will be reduced at the start of 2024.

With AFCON expected to start on January 13, the English Premier League enters a two-week break from January 15 to 28, with no domestic league matches played during that period. The third round of the FA Cup is scheduled to be played on January 6 while the fourth round is scheduled for January 27.

It is likely that many of the players called up for AFCON duty will miss January’s first set of the FA Cup, and one Premier League game on the weekend of January 13-14, while with their national team squads.

There will also be a Carabao Cup with the second legs of the semi-finals scheduled for January 21. However, European competitions will not be technically affected, where the Champions League round of 16 from February 13-14 and the Europa League and Conference Europa League on February 15.
