Position Summary
The Ifakara Health Institute, through the PMI Shinda (DEFEAT) Malaria project is preparing to conduct a Therapeutic Efficacy Study (TES), an antimalarial drug efficacy and safety study in Ngara DC. The study involves screening, enrolment, and treatment of children (6 months to 10 years old) with the first line and alternative antimalarial drugs and following them up for 28 or 42 days to assess treatment outcomes. The study is expected to run for six (6) months from mid-May to mid-October 2024.
The Lab technician will work under the directive of the Principal Investigator of the study and will be engaged in patient screening and result interpretation including laboratory sample collection, analysis, recording, interpreting and storage of samples. The nature of the position requires a high level of commitment, ability to work under tight schedules and long hours.
Duties and Responsibilities
- To perform laboratory analysis from malaria blood smears and other specimens as required by the protocol
- To respond to queries, concerns and issues raised by the supervisor/principal investigator or a monitor
- To ensure that participant’s privacy and confidentiality are maintained
- To communicate with other study staff regularly at scheduled meetings and actively participate in all meetings
- To ensure the study is done according to the working protocol and adherence to the ICH Guidelines of Good Laboratory Clinical Practice (GLCP)
- To maintain close professional relationships with the government officials in the study area
- To work professionally and ethically with competence, accountability and integrity.
- To perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor
- To Perform any other activities as instructed by the supervisor
Qualification and Experience
- Diploma in medical laboratory technology
- Valid license Skills and Competencies
- Experience in GCLP-compliant medical research
- Attained at least Basic certification in Malaria microscopy Competence assessment
- Self-motivated and highly focused attitude to work
- Good verbal and written communication skills in English
- Experience of not less than 1 year of working in clinical research, particularly on antimalarial therapeutic efficacy studie
