Interview and examination to Teachers – Ajira za walimu 2024, Tanzania’s Minister of Education, Prof. Adolf Mkenda, last month announced that in the new recruitment of teachers this year, teachers will begin taking exams before being hired. Prof Mkenda said that these changes are in line with new education policies and curricula in Tanzania.
For a long time in Tanzania, teachers have only been hired without taking a exams or interview as it is for other cadres. For example, in the health cadres, job applicants are first interviewed and screened to find new employees. Also despite being interviewed, also in the health cadres, the graduates of the health courses take an exam to get the work license they have studied.
This will be new for the teachers as it is something that is not familiar. Prof Mkenda said that the purpose of conducting an examination for new teachers who will apply for employment is to filter and find teachers with the qualifications and criteria to become teachers.
