Kilolo District is one of the five councils in Iringa Region. It was established in 2005 through Government Notice No. 220 after being split from Iringa District. Kilolo District covers an area of 7,882 square kilometers.
Kilolo District is located between latitudes 7.0°–8.30° south of the Equator and longitudes 34.0°–37.0° east of the Greenwich Meridian. It borders Mpwapwa District (Dodoma Region) to the north, Kilosa District to the northeast, Kilombero District (Morogoro Region) to the east, Mufindi District to the south, and Iringa Rural District to the west.
