Kigamboni District is created from the mother District of Temeke and is one of the 5 Districts that make up the Dar es Salaam Region. Kigamboni District was established through Government Announcement no. 462 of 2015 with the aim of moving services closer to citizens.

Kigamboni District has an area of 577.9 square kilometers equal to 57,786.8 hectares and a coastal strip with a length of 65 kilometers. In addition, Kigamboni District is bordered by the Indian Ocean in the east, Mkuranga District in the south – Coastal Region and in the north it is bordered by the Indian Ocean and in the west it is bordered by Temeke District.

Following the 2012 Population and Housing Census, Kigamboni District had a total of 162,932 people and 40,133 households. Among them, there were 81,199 men and 81,733 women. As of December 2019, Kigamboni District is estimated to have 238,591 residents of which 119,686 are women and 118,905 are men, this is due to an increase of 5.6 percent per year.
