The department of Basic Education deals with schools in South Africa, from Grade R to 12 and adult literacy programmes. The Department of Basic Education was formed when the former National Department of Education was split into two: Department of Basic Education and the Department of Higher Education and Training. The DBE deals with all schools from Grade R to Grade 12, including adult literacy programmes. The aim of the DBE is to develop, maintain and support a South African school education system for the 21st century

The Funza Lushaka Bursary Programme is a multi-year programme to promote teaching as a profession. Bursaries are available to enable selected students to complete a teaching qualification in identified Subject priority areas. Recipients of these bursaries will be required to teach at a public school for the same number of years that they received the bursary.

Roles and responsibilities

This is a national programme which is administered each public higher education institution (HEI). It is funded by National Treasury and managed by the Department of Basic Education (DBE).

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) financially administers the programme on behalf of DBE through the Student Financial Aid office at each HEI.

Provincial Co-ordinators implement district and community based teacher recruitment programmes in collaboration with – district co-coordinators. Provincial Co-ordinators respond to queries from applicants in their respective provinces and districts and assist them to apply online for the bursary. Provincial Co-ordinators manage the provincial selections of the district recruited applicants.

Selected students must meet the admission criteria of the academic programme at the HEI to which they apply, and must meet the national selection criteria for the Funza Lushaka bursary. Selection of bursars is undertaken at each HEI in accordance with the selection criteria and the funds allocated to each HEI.

Once qualified, bursary recipients are placed by a provincial education department.

Each year students who are studying to be teachers, are invited to apply for the Funza Lushaka Bursary. The Funza Lushaka Bursary fund two type of qualifications:-

Undergraduates Studies

4 years bachelor of education degree (BEd). Specialize in the following :- Foundation phase (Grade R to Grade 3, Intermediate Phase (Grade 4 to 6 ) or Senior and Further education and Training Teaching (Grade 7 to Grade 12)

Graduates Studies:

1 year Postgraduates Certificates in Education (PGCE) For graduates parsuing degrees with two priority subjects (1 Module or Course must have been Completed or studied at 3rd year level, 1 priority subject must have complited or atudied at 2nd year Level)

Only the PGCE senior phase and futher education and Training Teaching (SPFET) Grade 7 to grade 12 wil be funded

What the The Bursary will cover?

Tuition fees, Books, Study materials, Accommodations, Meals, Teaching Practices and Allowance for general living expenses, if available and capped at a certain amount

Bursary Students will be required to Teach at a Public school selected by Provincial Education Department (PED) -the service Contract duration will be equal to the duration of bursary funding

Who is eligible to apply?

Any academically gifted, young –

  • learners, currently in Grade 12;
  • graduates below the age of 30 who want to complete a teaching qualification or enrol for a PGCE;
  • people below the age of 30 who want to make a career change and become teachers; and
  • unemployed people below the age of 30 who want to become teachers.

Prospective bursars must first gain admission at a higher education institution (HEI). Applications may be submitted online at www.funzalushaka.doe.gov.za

  1. Open the e-Gov portal at www.eservices.gov.za
  2. Register by providing personal information
  3. Login to the system using user name and password created when registering
  4. On the e-Services Menu select Funza Lushaka Bursary Scheme
  5. Enter the OTP received on the preferred channel
  6. Accept the Terms and Conditions
  7. On the dashboard menu click on the 2022 application button
  8. Follow the steps to complete the required field with your information
  9. Accept the declaration to confirm the information captured
