NECTA was established by Law, in 1973, the Curriculum and Examinations Section of the Ministry of Education was responsible for all examinations. With the establishment of NECTA, the Examinations became its responsibility in accordance with the law.
The Curriculum continued to be under the Ministry of Education and the University College, Dar es Salaam until when it was taken over by the newly established, autonomous Institute of Curriculum Development (ICD) in 1975, which in 1993 was renamed as the Tanzania Institute of Education (TIE).
Between 1972 and 1976 the first staff of NECTA were recruited, among them was Mr. P. P Gandye who was recruited in 1972 and later on in 1994 was appointed as Executive Secretary. The other staff members continued to be recruited and especially so when NECTA’s premises moved from the Ministry of Education Headquarters to the present premises at Kijitonyama near Mwenge. Presently the number of NECTA’s staff is more than 250.

The Tanzania Examination Council (Necta) has announced the results of the form six in 2023 while showing that the overall performance has increased by 0.26 percent compared to last year.

Announcing the results today, Thursday July 13, 2023 at the Council’s offices in Zanzibar, Necta Executive Secretary Dr. Said Mohamed said that the total number of candidates registered to take the exam is 106,883, with 47,340 girls and 59,543 boys.
“A total of 104,549 candidates equal to 99.23 percent of the candidates who took the sixth form exam 2023 have passed,” he said.
The girls who passed are 46,707 equal to 99.51 percent while in the case of boys, those who passed are 57, 843 equal to 99 percent.
In 2022, those who passed were 93,136 equal to 98.97 percent, so the overall success has increased by 0.26 percent compared to 2023.

The objectives of this examination are to assess the learner’s knowledge and ability to pursue with further education such as diploma and degree courses; to examine the extent to which the learners can use the skills gained to meet the social, political, economic and technological challenges for the individual and the national development at large. Another category is Arts Combinations which Includes History, Geography and English Language (HGL), History, Geography and Kiswahili (HGK), History, Kiswahili and English Language (HKL), Kiswahili, English Language and French (KLF), Economics, Commerce and Accountancy (ECA) and History, Geography and Economics (HGE).
