Meet Nyakasura School only school in Africa where Boys wear Skirts as Uniform. Nyakasura School is a mixed, boarding, middle, and high school in Fort Portal, Kabarole District, Western Region of Uganda. The school was founded by Scotsman Ernest Ebohard Calwell, a retired naval officer, in 1926. Calwell was a teacher at King’s College Budo when he fell out with the headmaster there. They had differences on what uniform the students should wear.

There were two students from Toro Kingdom at Buddo at that time, by the names of Komwiswa and Byara. They convinced Calwell to come and ask the Brother of Toro for land to set up a school like Buddo in Toro. Rukirabasaija Daudi Kasagama Kyebambe III showed the Calwell three sites, out of which he selected Nyakasura. He selected Scottish kilts as the boys’ uniform

Origin of skirts for boys at Nyakasura. Nyakasura is the only school in Uganda and perhaps Africa where male students wear kilts as their school uniform. While giving the school’s history, the principal revealed that they are just carrying on with what the founder started.

Skirt form the only national costume in the British Isles that is worn for ordinary purposes, rather than merely for a special occasion.

The highland dress is also the uniform of Scottish regiments in the British army, and kilts have been worn in battle, even the World War II. He said that the students love their uniforms so much because it makes them unique despite being mocked by the community.
