Simiyu Region
Simiyu Region was established by Government Announcement (GN) no. 72 dated 02 March, 2012. This region is located in Northern Tanzania, South East of Lake Victoria. This region is located between longitude 33°03″ and 34°01″ East of the Greenwich Line and latitude 02°01″ to 04°00″ South of the Equator. To the North, Simiyu Region is bordered by Mara Region; on the Eastern side, Arusha Singida and Manyara Regions; South Shinyanga and Tabora Region and West Mwanza Region.
Simiyu Region has an area of 23,807.70 square kilometers. The suitable area for agricultural and breeding activities is 11,479.10 square kilometers, 11,723.60 square kilometers is the area of the Serengeti National Park, Maswa, Kijereshi and Mwiba Reserve Forests; and Wildlife Habitat Community Parks (WMAs) located in Meath District and 605 square kilometers is the catchment area of Lake Victoria.
According to the National Population and Housing Census of 2002, Simiyu Region had a total of 1,584,157 people; Men being 759,891 and Women 824,266. The region has an average population increase of 1.8 percent per year.
Rainfall per year averages between 600mm to 900mm. In some areas (Meatu) the amount of rain is 400mm. The temperature ranges from 18°C to 31°C. Generally, there are two rainy seasons; the autumn rainy season between the months of October to December and the rainy season between the months of February and May every year.
