The Kariakoo Derby Returns — This Time, Everything Is on the Line

Prize: TSh 150M to winner

It was only a matter of time. Tanzania’s two football giants — Yanga SC and Simba SC — have navigated their respective paths through the 2026 Muungano Cup and, as so often feels inevitable, they meet in the final. On Wednesday, 29 April 2026, at the New Amaan Complex in Zanzibar, the Kariakoo Derby will once again take centre stage — this time with silverware, a TSh 150 million prize, and bragging rights on the line.

The anticipation surrounding this match is immense. Both clubs carry passionate, enormous fanbases, and their rivalry — arguably the fiercest in East African football — gives every single encounter an electricity that few sporting contests on the continent can match. Tonight’s final promises to be no different.

How Each Side Got Here

Yanga SC’s Journey

Quarterfinal
Yanga SC 4–0 Muembe Makumbi City
Semifinal
Yanga SC 2–1 Azam FC

Yanga SC entered the tournament in emphatic fashion, dismantling Muembe Makumbi City 4–0 in the quarterfinals. The semifinal was a stiffer test — Azam FC, never a side to be taken lightly, pushed Yanga hard — but Wananchi held their nerve and sealed a 2–1 victory to reach the final for the second consecutive year. Defending champions. Favourites. Targets.

Simba SC’s Journey

Quarterfinal
Simba SC 1–0 Mafunzo SC
Semifinal
Mlandege FC 0–3 Simba SC

Simba SC, meanwhile, began with a narrow but composed 1–0 win over Mafunzo SC before producing a dominant semifinal display, defeating Mlandege FC 3–0. Having stepped away from other competitions to focus on domestic glory, Mnyama — The Lion — arrive in Zanzibar with one clear objective: strip Yanga of their title.

More Than a Cup Final

This final marks the second Kariakoo Derby to be held at the New Amaan Complex in 2026. The first came in the NBC Premier League on 1 March 2026, a tension-filled goalless draw that settled nothing in the long-running argument over who rules Tanzanian football. If that stalemate frustrated both sets of supporters, tonight offers the chance for a definitive answer — at least for this season.

In the league, Yanga currently sit top of the NBC Premier League standings, with Simba one place behind. The broader picture makes this final even more loaded: a cup title for Yanga would strengthen an already commanding season; a victory for Simba could be the momentum shift their campaign desperately needs.

The head-to-head record over the last seven encounters tells a striking story: Yanga SC have won six, with only one draw separating the sides. Simba are yet to taste victory in this recent run — a fact that their squad will be acutely aware of as they take the field tonight. History, however, only counts for so much. Cup finals are their own beast.

What to Expect Tonight

The financial stakes — TSh 150 million for the winner, TSh 100 million for the runner-up — add a material dimension to a fixture that has never been short on motivation. But for clubs of this stature, money is secondary to honour. Yanga will be desperate to lift the cup for the second year running and cement their place at the apex of Tanzanian football. Simba will be equally desperate to deny them.

Zanzibar’s New Amaan Complex will be rocking. The Kariakoo Derby is one of East Africa’s greatest football spectacles, and with a cup final as the canvas, expect a match that is physical, passionate, and decided by the finest of margins. Don’t miss it.
