The Kilimanjaro School of Pharmacy (KSP) was established in September 2002 with the enrollment of eight (8) students following the approval of the then Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to undertake a two-year course in Pharmaceutical Science which resulted in the issuance of Assistant Certificates. Medicine for its graduates. The school is owned by St. Luke’s Foundation (SLF), which is the foundation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT). The idea of establishing a KSP was based on the experience gained during support management visits to hospitals under the ELCT Intervention Unit (IUP) project in many trust hospitals run by pharmacists from IUP. During these visits, they found that most IUP hospitals, mostly in rural Tanzania, did not have trained pharmacists to perform the roles and responsibilities of qualified pharmacists as stipulated in the Regulations.

The school is legally recognized by the Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Children and Elderly (MoHCDGEC) and fully accredited by the National Council for Technical Education (NACTE) to offer programmes in Pharmaceutical Sciences at National Technical Awards (NTA) Level 4 to 6. The School is located within the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center (KCMC) compounds, five (5) kilometres from Moshi municipal town.
