Kaliua District is one of the eight Local Government Authorities of Tabora and was established on March 2, 2012 and began its full operation on 14 August 2013. Prior to its establishment Kaliua and Ulyankulu were part of Urambo District. The area grew large to be under the District (Urambo) and led to shortages in the provision of quality social services.

The Kaliua District Headquarters is located in Kaliua town, 125 km from Tabora Municipality. Kibondo (Kigoma Region) West. The northern part of the district is bordered by Ushetu (Shinyanga Region) and Bukombe (Geita region) in the northwest.

Kaliua District has a total land area of 14,050 square kilometers which is approximately 18.82% of the total area of Tabora. The agricultural area is 1,965.5 square kilometers out of which 1,500 square kilometers are cultivated annually. The remaining 12,084.5 (86%) are forest reserves, common grasslands and water resources. The vegetation of the district is divided into the natural miombo forests found in Igombenkulu, Milambo and Kanindo.
