SGR is under Tanzania Railway cooperation TRC, The Tanzania Railway Corporation, is an organization created under the Railway Act No. 10 of 2017 with the main objective of providing quality and reliable railway transport services, managing, developing and ensuring the protection and safety of the railway infrastructure in Tanzania.

The history of Tanzania Railways can be traced back to 1948 when the East African Railways and Ports Corporation (EAR&H) was established. The East African Railways and Ports Corporation was created in 1948 in parallel with the East African Community and was a public organization that managed the railways and ports of Kenya, Uganda and Tanganyika and later Tanzania in the years before and after the independence of these countries.

SGR is a modern railway with a width of 1.435 meters, and available worldwide for more than fifty-five percent (55%). Unlike the normal railway, this railway can transport heavy weight and travel at high speed.

The Government of the United Republic of Tanzania through the Tanzania Railway Corporation (TRC) has decided to build this modern railway to spread a network of no less than 2,561 km connecting the regions of Dar es Salaam, Mwanza, Kigoma, Katavi and countries that have ports (Rwanda, Burundi, DRC). .

SGR is a modern and first railway in East and Central Africa that will be able to pass trains that will be driven by electric energy and with a speed of not less than 160 kilometers per hour.

The goal of this railway is to increase efficiency in the transportation sector in the country especially the railway sector where the following will be simplified;

  • An increase in cargo transportation where the railway will carry a load of up to 10,000 tons at a time equal to the capacity of 500 cargo trucks.
  • Saving time for passenger and cargo transportation, which will help grow the economy of individuals and the Nation as a whole.
  • Increase in employment for natives in various sectors and professions.
  • The improvement of social services involving the construction of schools, health centers and the construction of roads in the areas covered by the project.
  • Stimulating development in the sector of agriculture, commerce, mining and industry, especially in the areas where the railway passes, as well as in neighboring countries, especially Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, Kenya and DRC.
  • Economic benefits to the transport sector especially reducing the regular costs of road maintenance.

The construction of a modern railway for our country with a network of 1,219 km of main lines, is in five phases and is as follows;

  • ØPhase 1 Dae es Salaam – Morogoro (300 Km)
  • Ø Phase 2 Morogoro- Makutupora (Km 422)
  • Ø Phase 3 Makutupora – Tabora (Km 294)
  • ØPhase 4 Tabora – Isaka (Km 130)
  • ØAwaam ya 5 Isaka – Mwanza (Km 249)

First phase: Dar es Salaam – Morogoro (300 Km). The construction of the modern railway for the first phase was launched by the President of the fifth phase. Dr John Pombe Magufuli on the 12th of April 2017. And currently the construction is still going on under the contractor YAPI MERKEZI from Turkey collaborating with MOTA ENGIL AFRICA from Portugal.

Second phase: Morogoro – Makutupora (Km 442). The construction of the project was launched by the President of the fifth phase. Dr John Pombe Magufuli on the 14th of March 2018. And currently the initial stages of construction have started under the contractor YAPI MERKAZI.

Phase 3, 4, and 5: These phases are in various stages of procurement.

While the initial passenger train services in the Modern Railway (SGR), between Dar es Salaam-Morogoro-Dodoma are planned to start on July 25, 2024, the schedule of the trip has been officially announced.

A statement from the Head of the Tanzania Railways (TRC) Relations Unit, Jamillah Mbarouk, said the express train schedule will leave Dar es Salaam at 12:00 in the morning and will leave Dodoma at 11:30 in the morning.
