Job Purpose
The Relationship Manager – Institutional Banking will be responsible for growing and retaining a portfolio of Institutional Banking clients, including government and private institutions.
The role involves providing proactive and value-adding financial partnership services, maintaining close relationships with clients, and delivering customised financial solutions and services tailored to the growth needs of institutional clients.
Main Responsibilities
1. Relationship Management and Business Growth
- Manage existing customer relationships through regular contacts and visits, ensuring customers’ banking needs are addressed effectively and in a timely manner.
- Partner with product teams and other internal staff to develop and deliver clear account plans based on an understanding of client needs.
- Provide appropriate solutions across relevant products by leveraging the bank’s competitive strengths, including its network, balance sheet and brand.
- Identify and develop a target pipeline and actively market for new profitable institutional customers.
- Identify and exploit cross-selling opportunities.
- Gather information required to prepare and assess credit applications and manage customer expectations.
- Manage the development of prudently priced assets and cost-effective long-term liabilities with reputable institutions and organisations to maximise bank profitability.
- Identify and take ownership of sales leads generated for the bank across the banking ecosystem, including Corporate Banking, Business Banking and Retail Banking.
- Manage product partners to ensure work standards and quality output targets are established, achieved and maintained.
2. Customer Service Quality and Efficiency
- Adhere to high professional standards and provide quality services and competitive pricing to clients.
- Ensure delivery of industry-leading customer service, a premier onboarding experience and advisory services to new and existing institutional customers.
- Act as a proactive liaison between customers, client service delivery teams, back-office service fulfilment teams and credit functions.
- Interact frequently and closely with clients to analyse and establish their ongoing needs.
- Assist clients in better understanding their financial requirements.
- Accurately and efficiently process customer mandates and documentation requirements for financial facilities.
- Analyse customer data to identify and plan for expansion and additional business opportunities for the bank.
- Develop and implement a client-calling schedule to ensure regular visits to all clients within the portfolio.
3. Risk Management
- Monitor and manage regulatory compliance, including Know Your Customer (KYC) requirements.
- Conduct Control Self-Assessments and address root causes of issues identified.
- Maintain a high-quality asset book and ensure strong performance and maximum returns from the portfolio.
- Gather information required to prepare and assess credit applications while managing customer expectations.
- Proactively manage the client portfolio in compliance with the regulatory environment and the bank’s guidelines, policies and procedures.
- Mitigate financial loss and fraud risks within the bank.
- Maintain high standards of operational controls, including adherence to Risk Management and Compliance guidelines.
- Embed NMB values and the Code of Conduct by ensuring adherence to high standards of ethics, policies, processes and applicable regulations.
- Consult with Risk, Credit, Legal and Compliance teams to ensure the portfolio remains creditworthy and within the bank’s policies.
- Manage the Institutional Banking liability and loan book within the bank’s risk appetite statement.
- Prepare high-quality client credit applications for submission to CREDCO.
- Ensure continuous growth of a quality credit portfolio and a sustainable, self-funded wholesale banking balance sheet.
- Ensure proper record keeping for all documents submitted by clients for banking services.
Knowledge and Skills
Candidates should have:
- Knowledge of general banking practices, policies, procedures and the regulatory environment.
- Current knowledge of different industry sectors and sector risk profiles and trends.
- In-depth understanding of Institutional Banking competitors, including their activities, drivers, products, strengths, vulnerabilities, market share and client base.
- Broad and detailed technical knowledge of Institutional Banking practices and procedures.
- Strong customer relationship management skills.
- Sound understanding of banking products, policies and procedures.
- Strong analytical skills, including the ability to identify and analyse patterns and trends and understand cause-and-effect relationships.
- An inquisitive and analytical mindset.
- Fluency in both written and spoken English and Swahili.
- Strong numerical skills and financial acumen.
- Ability to analyse, evaluate and identify trends in complex consolidated financial statements, balance sheets and financial ratios.
- Strong persuasion, sales and negotiation skills.
- Ability to influence others and present convincing arguments.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Qualifications and Experience
Academic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Business Administration, Finance, Marketing, Statistics, Research or a related field.
- Master’s degree in Business Studies will be an added advantage.
- Postgraduate education in Banking and/or professional banking certification(s) will be an added advantage.
Professional Experience
- Minimum of four (4) years’ experience in Relationship Management, specifically managing government and other public-sector clients.
