The National Institute of Transport (NIT) is a public higher education institution located west of Dar es Salaam, along Mabibo Road in Ubungo Light Industrial District; Only 1 km from Morogoro Road. NIT was established in 1975 as the training wing of the then National Transport Corporation (NTC). NIT has been tasked with increasing the human resource capacity of logistics clients and middle-level managers of NTC partners. These subsidiaries are: National Bus Services Limited (KAMATA), Transport Dar-as-Salaam Limited (UDA), Regional Transport Companies (RETCOs), n.k.
In 1982, it was discovered that there was a need for an institution that covered all modes of transportation. The Institute has expanded its scope of activities and responsibilities. As a result, NIT was re-established through NIT Act No. 24 of 1982 as an independent higher education institution under the Ministry of Communications and Labor at the time. The institution came into operation on July 1, 1983 through Government Notice No. 91. Currently, the institution is under the Ministry of Transport. With legal status by the Board of Directors it was given the responsibility of running and managing the Institute.

The National Institute of Transport is the only training center of its kind in sub-Saharan Africa except South Africa, and has been mandated by the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania to provide transport and communication training.

The institute has been fully accredited by the National Council for Technical Education (NACTE) to offer Education and Vocational Training (CBET) programs in Certificate, Diploma and Degree (National Vocational Awards – Level 4 to Level 8). It is also accredited by the Chartered Institute of Transportation and Transportation (CILT International) to teach and explore CILT programs for International Basic Certificates, International Certificates, Ordinary Diploma and Advanced Diploma in Transportation and Transportation. In addition, the institute is partnering with the Open University of Tanzania (OUT) and International Procurement Management and Supply Chain Management (IPSCMC) to offer an MBA in Transportation and Shipping Management and a Master’s Degree in Procurement and Supply Chain Management
